Holy Thursday Morning
On Holy Thursday morning we sing the Orthros Service combined with the Vesper Service and the Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great. During this service we commemorated four events: The washing of the Disciples feet by Jesus, the institution of the Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper, the praying of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, and the Betrayal.
During this Liturgy an extra “Amnos” (Lamb or Host) is consecrated. This Lamb is preserved throughout the year to be given to those who are sick and cannot come to Church to receive Holy Communion during a Divine Liturgy.
Holy Thursday Evening
On Holy Thursday Evening the Service of the Holy Passion of our Lord, Jesus Christ is celebrated. The dramatic events are described in the twelve Gospel readings. The climax of the Service occurs after the fifth Gospel reading when the procession of the Crucifix takes place.
During this time the priest carries the crucifix and narrates the hymn: “Today is hung upon the Tree, He Who suspended the land in the midst of Waters. (3 times) A crown of thorns crowns Him, Who is the King of Angels. He is wrapped about with the purple of mockery He received buffetings, He Who freed Adam In the Jordan. He was transfixed with nails, He Who is the Son of the Virgin. We worship Thy Passion O Christ (3 times), Show also unto us Thy glorious Resurrection.”
