Athletics
Building faith, friendship, teamwork, and community through sports
Athletics at Assumption Long Beach gives young people and families another meaningful way to connect with the life of the church. Through sports, children and teens can build friendships, learn teamwork, grow in confidence, and experience the joy of being part of a supportive Orthodox Christian community.
Our athletics program is about more than competition. It is about fellowship, encouragement, character, and giving young people a healthy environment where they can grow socially, physically, and spiritually. Whether participating on the basketball team or taking part in future athletic opportunities, youth at Assumption are invited to bring energy, commitment, and a spirit of respect to everything they do.
Athletics at Assumption Long Beach
Athletics at Assumption Long Beach is designed to support the development of young people both on and off the court. Sports can teach responsibility, discipline, communication, and perseverance—qualities that serve children well in school, at home, in friendships, and in their faith journey.
As part of parish life, athletics also helps strengthen bonds between youth, families, and the broader church community. It creates a positive space where participants can challenge themselves, cheer one another on, and represent Assumption with pride.
Basketball and Team Participation
Our athletics page currently highlights our basketball team, and basketball can be a wonderful way for young people to stay active while learning the value of teamwork and sportsmanship. Players gain experience working together toward shared goals, supporting one another, and growing through both wins and setbacks.
Just as importantly, athletics helps young people develop habits of commitment, practice, and respect. These lessons often stay with them far beyond the game itself.
Why Athletics Matters
For many families, parish athletics offers a natural bridge between church life and everyday life. It gives children and teens another way to stay connected to the parish while spending time with friends in a structured and uplifting environment.
Sports can also help young people:
• build confidence
• develop teamwork and leadership
• practice discipline and consistency
• form lasting friendships
• represent their church community in a positive way
At Assumption, we believe these experiences can be an important part of helping youth feel seen, supported, and involved.
A Welcoming Program for Families
Athletics at Assumption Long Beach is also a great entry point for families who want to become more involved in parish life. Parents, grandparents, and caregivers often find that youth programs create new connections and friendships across the community.
When young people participate, the whole parish benefits. Athletics brings families together, encourages volunteer support, and adds another layer of fellowship to the life of the church.
Part of Our Youth Community
Athletics is one important part of our wider youth life at Assumption. Families may also want to explore programs such as Little Lambs, HOPE & JOY, GOYA, and Sunday School to see how children can stay connected through every stage of growth.
