Prayerful Support in a Time of Loss
The Trisagion Service is a sacred Orthodox Christian memorial prayer offered for a loved one who has fallen asleep in the Lord. At Assumption Long Beach, our parish is here to help families with compassion, clarity, and care.
When a death occurs, the Church surrounds the family with prayer. The Trisagion Ministry helps families understand the next steps, coordinate with clergy and the church office, and honor the departed with the traditions of the Orthodox faith.
What Is the Trisagion Service?
The word “Trisagion” means “Thrice-Holy,” referring to the prayer, “Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us.” In Orthodox Christian practice, the Trisagion Service is a brief memorial prayer offered by the priest on behalf of the departed.
The service may be held at the funeral home, in the church, during a wake, or at the graveside. Though brief, it carries deep meaning. Through these prayers, the Church asks Christ to grant rest, forgiveness, mercy, and eternal memory to the soul of His servant.
When Is the Trisagion Offered?
At Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Long Beach, the Trisagion Service is commonly offered the evening before the funeral service, often around 7:00 p.m. or 7:30 p.m., depending on family arrangements and clergy availability.
It may also be offered at the graveside following the funeral. Because each family’s circumstances are different, the parish will help determine the most appropriate time and location.
How the Ministry Helps Families
During a time of grief, practical details can feel overwhelming. The Trisagion Ministry helps families by offering guidance, answering questions, and assisting with coordination between the family, clergy, funeral home, cemetery, and church office.
- Helping families understand Orthodox funeral and memorial customs
- Coordinating Trisagion service timing with clergy and the church office
- Offering compassionate support as arrangements are made
- Helping families know who to contact and what information may be needed
Orthodox Christian Comfort in a Time of Grief
The Trisagion Service is more than a tradition. It is an expression of the Church’s love, prayer, and hope. In moments of grief, Orthodox Christians do not mourn alone. The parish community stands with the family, praying for the departed and asking God to grant peace, mercy, and rest.
